Life coach Miedaner (Coach Yourself to Success) has written a self-help manual counseling readers on how to attract love into their lives or rediscover the love that somehow got lost in your current relationship. Her basic concept: people are motivated by a few basic needs, needs that can bloom into dreaded neediness—toxic for love. Fulfill your unmet emotional needs and live your top core values, Miedaner says, and love will seek you out. The book includes her weighty (and often challenging) patented Emotional Quiz Index to identify core needs (Control/Power, Order, Peace/Balance, Security/Safety, etc.) and advice on how to achieve them and establish boundaries. On occasion, Miedaner’s advice can be simplistic; to meet the need for independence, she advises readers to pay off all your credit cards… so you are financially free. Clearly, this is good advice, but if it were so easy, there wouldn’t be such a booming market for financial self-help (more…)

Julianne Moore and Pierce Brosnan turn on the movie-star twinkle in Laws of Attraction. They’re both divorce lawyers whose in-court conflicts give rise to sparks of an entirely different nature–and while they’re in Ireland, trying to determine whether the husband or wife in a rock-star divorce deserves to keep a swank castle, they “accidentally” get married. Back in New York, they agree to keep up the pretence of marriage, lest a quickie divorce make them the laughingstocks of the legal community. Few comedies are as outright clumsy as Laws of Attraction; the plot falls apart even as you’re watching it, the dialogue stumbles, the direction is graceless. Somehow Moore (Far From Heaven, The Hours) and Brosnan (Tomorrow Never Dies) sustain their charm–but if you’re looking for a comedy about divorce, Intolerable Cruelty or the classic Adam’s Rib provide a lot more fun. –Bret Fetzer

Review
Picking up where Rhonda Byrne’s The Secret left off, coauthors D’Aoust (lecturer, Philosophical Research Soc.) and Parfrey (Cult Rapture: Revelations of the Apocalyptic Mind) explain how believers and visionaries from a variety of teachings have improved their well-being using mental powers. They guide readers through several Hermetic teachings, shed light on the New Thought spiritual movement, explain how the Christ mythos and Jewish kabbalistic texts borrowed from the Hermetic tradition, and reveal how many of today’s get-rich-quick schemes have roots in Hermetic laws. While not for everyone, this book provides an unbiased view of the teachings of secret societies and will interest many patrons. Recommended for all libraries. — By Deborah Bigelow, Director, Leonia P.L., NJ — Library Journal, 1/15/2008 The success of Rhonda Byrne’s self-help manual The Secret, while undoubtedly noteworthy, is somewhat baffling considering that the subject matter is nothing (more…)
